I do some volunteer work as a Herpes counselor at my local clinic and one of the things that people are always amazed are the several types of Herpes viruses that exist. Most people think there is only two kinds and is so far from the truth. Below, please find the complete list taken from my notes.
The Herpes family of viruses includes eight different
viruses that affect humans. The official names are known by numerical
designation with the most common or better known ones been Herpes simplex
virus type 1 and Herpes simplex virus type 2. The first three human herpes
viruses are called neutropic because they go for the nerve cells. The complete
list is as follows:
- Human herpes virus 1 (HHVI): Most commonly known as
herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1). This is the herpes virus that causes
cold sores or herpes of the eye.
- Human herpes virus 2 (HHV2): Known as herpes simplex
virus 2 (HSV2), this is the type of herpes that causes genital herpes.
- Human herpes virus 3 (HHV3): This is the official name
for herpes zoster virus also known as zoster or shingles and is the cause of
chickenpox.
- Human herpes virus 4 (HHV4): This is the official name
of Epstein-Barr virus. An uncommon virus that causes mononucleosis also
known as kissing disease.
- Human herpes virus 5 (HHV5)
This article is a brief description of the various types of Herpes out there.
If you are looking for more information about this, please talk to a health
professional.
