Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts contain a compound that inhibits reproduction of the virus that causes cold sores and genital herpes, a recent study found.

"It has not been shown that eating broccoli will by itself prevent or get rid of a [herpes] infection," says lead researcher Terri D. Stoner, a graduate student at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in Rootstown. "But the finding [may lead to] development of a drug and is another reason to eat cruciferous vegetables."
