Bell's Palsy Is Linked With Herpes Infection |

USING highly refined genetic techniques, medical researchers in Japan have identified the common cold sore virus, herpes simplex, as the likely cause of most cases of Bell's palsy, a debilitating facial paralysis for which there is currently no specific treatment. Bell's palsy results from an inflammation of a major facial nerve. It causes pain in the jaw and numbness and drooping on one side of the face that gives patients a split-faced appearance -- happy on one side, sad on the other -- when they try to smile. Although the herpes simplex virus has been suspected since 1972 to be a cause of this disorder, definitive evidence for its involvement has been difficult to obtain.... Read more at: . |
