Company Wants to Sell Genital Herpes Drug Over the Counter |

A drug company is seeking Federal permission to sell the first nonprescription drug for a sexually transmitted disease, saying that it would allow millions of Americans to fight the disease, genital herpes, while saving money. But critics say that allowing the sale of the drug, acyclovir, without a prescription could endanger patients and might lead to the development of more cases of genital herpes that are resistant to the drug. Some opponents also say that sufferers would actually have less access to the drug, which is the only relief from herpes, because insurance companies do not pay for over-the-counter drugs....
