By Henry J. Fishman, M.D. January 18, 2006 After years of trying, researchers carried out the first successful trial of a vaccine to prevent genital herpes. The vaccine cut the risk of getting the sexually-transmitted disease by 75 percent, but for some reason it worked only for women and only for those without a history of cold sores. Researchers don't know why the vaccine doesn't help men or work in folks with herpes one, the cold sore virus, but haven't given up. They'll keep working until a herpes vaccine works for everyone and gets rid of one of hte most common sexually-transmitted diseases. Until we have a vaccine, practice safe sex or abstinence. If you get herpes, ask about the herpes pills. | |||||||
